Music
Therapy is a significantly useful intervention for people with cognitive,
emotional and physical disabilities. Music has a way of reaching us
in a way that is both unique and powerful. All people have an innate
responsiveness to music, in spite of emotional, physical, or cognitive
impairments, and this responsiveness can be used to provide the opportunity
for successful experience in the music session. Music Therapy is appropriate
for anyone seeking to work on self esteem, social interaction, developmental
delays, anxiety, addiction, or any other area where a therapeutic interaction
may aid the client. In this practice, live music is the main tool of
communication and expression, although recorded music may also be used
for relaxation or discussion purposes. The client is asked to play only
that which is suited to their taste and abilities (I often hear “I
want the drum” or see someone staring at a keyboard or tambourine)
and we easily move from talking to playing. We may choose to put words
to our music, thereby enhancing the opportunity for self expression.
Success is woven into the experience of music therapy, bringing with
it a rise in self confidence and self esteem for the composer. Emotions
are expressed rather than held in. These are great achievements for
one in therapy and are readily attainable through music therapy. For
more information, there is an American Music Therapy website, www.musictherapy.org
where one can find a myriad of resources and links. For a consultation
